Social Media Tip of the Day: 20 tips for firms doing Social Media on Christmas Day

Think with you being on social media is a crime? guess again, here are 20 tips for social media during christmas day with you should be doing!

20 tips for firms doing Social Media on Christmas Day

You do have Google Alerts set up for all relevant brand names and topics, yes?
Let people know you’ll be available online
Your site does work on the most popular mobiles and tablets, yes?
Have your FAQ updated and revised with most common/popular questions from this time of year at the top
In everything you put online, think like a consumer. What will they be asking?
Is your online store up and running OK? Do you have emergency contact phone numbers for any technical or PR issues that arise?
Schedule tweets across the day with links to the most commonly asked questions regarding your brands
Are there any relevant online links you can link to? Again, feel free to schedule them
If scheduling Facebook posts via Hootsuite or other tool, remember that it will impact on your Edgerank
Think about the times people will go online – for example, 3pm in the UK is a bad time as most are having dinner – and when your customers are like to be online
Is there anything you have – app for example – that you can encourage people to go to to download with their new tablets/phones/etc? Bonus points if it’s a free download (for example, a client of mine – Whyte & Mackay have a SatNav voice from a Scotsman that they make available as a free download for TomTom users)
Schedule some tweets wishing a Merry Xmas to the people who have been key helps or influencers to you over the year
Have a reply policy in place covering the most expected comments from consumers
Let people know in your biogs for Twitter and your latest Facebook updates – that you might not reply as promptly as normal but that you will reply (give them an ETA if you want.)
Check a few times throughout the day when you get a quiet moment. Having a properly set-up smartphone can be a gift for this as you can check things in the car (as long as you aren’t driving)
Remember, the odds are that if people are mentioning you for help or to moan about an issue, they just want you to resolve it quickly so they can get back to the fun stuff
Try not to post if you’ve had too much of the Christmas spirit (or any other kind of spirit) – a drunken tweet could cause the issues you are trying to avoid
As it’s Christmas, why not wish your competitors a Merry Xmas? After all, the British and Germans could do it during war. Also, the odds are they’ve taken Xmas off, so why not monitor their timelines/mentions and help people out if you can. It may get you customers in the long run…
Remember, many people will be watching TV with their laptop/mobile as their second screen for tweeting. Feel free to join in the chat if you have time
Have fun. Yes, it’s work but you can enjoy work you know
With a bit of planning and scheduling, there’s no reason to be chained to the keyboard all day long, but you should check in to make sure your customers are happy. After all, it’s the season of giving and it’s your place to give customer satisfaction and happiness.

Online Video Marketing Tip of the Day: Christmas Edition!

First, Happy holidays one and all! Hope everyone is having a very merry christmas!

Now on to some business!

Recently I noticed an increase of people using Digital Picture frames to engage and promote stores
promotional advertising. I then came across this little blurb which made a top 9 innovative and promotional ideas for small business!

DIGITAL PICTURE FRAMES
If a picture is worth a thousand words then digital picture frames are worth millions. Well, they could be worth that to you, anyway. They have been on the market for years, but only recently have begun selling well for Father’s Day and Christmas. For much less than a hundred dollars you can set a digital picture frame on your sales counter. You can either take your own sales pictures hyping your services and products or have a professional video production company make a nice video that will sell for you either with sound or without sound. The same video production (in an altered format) can be used for distribution on DVD and the internet. You can also use the Digital Picture Frames as a poor man’s kiosk to sell individual products. Video and photos are stored on a basic memory disk just like you use in a digital camera.

Online Video Marketing Tip of the Day:

Optimizing Videos for Search Engines

Optimize not only for video search engines, but also for content search engines. A good approach would be to use meta tags for the content (text) of the page where your video is placed.
Give relevant names to your videos. It's highly improbable that your video will show up in the SERPs if it is called "12032002.mov" rather than "XYZ- antivirus-demo.mov".
Use keywords in the video titles and their descriptions. Video search engines will find it much easier to index your video files and link it to your web pages.
Use anchor text if you link to the video from other pages of your Web site.
Make sure the video files you submit have the proper extension.
Make it short. Say in 2 minutes what would take a normal person 10 minutes to read on paper (or on a Web page).
SEO professionals recommend creating separate video site maps, which can be submitted to video and content search engines alike. Both kinds of SEs will index these site maps.
Remember to include RSS feeds. Metadata can be inserted here.
Research, measure, test, report and optimize.

Social Media Tip of the Day

Don’t overlook niche social media sites
When people think of social media, they typically think of Twitter or Facebook. But there are literally hundreds (maybe thousands?) of social media networks and sites that you can use to help promote your brand. Jut because a network isn’t huge doesn’t mean it’s not going to impact your social media strategy. Oftentimes targeted niche social sites can bring more targeted traffic to your site than larger sites.

If you’re smart, you can use smaller social networks to help promote your site on other bigger social networks. For example, I’ve written posts on web development that have made it to the front page of Dzone, a social media site for web development. Once the article made it to the front page of Dzone, the attention brought a lot of saves on Delicious, and subsequently made it to the Delicious front page. The delicious front page brought even more traffic, and those Delicious users voted the story up to the Digg front page. So, by simply submitting my site on a smaller niche news site with a great headline, I managed to make it to the coveted homepages of both Digg and Delicious.

Online Video Marketing Tip of the Day:

#3: Include your URL in your video

When you edit your video, take advantage of the different editing features. One easy feature is to add a text box to your video. This is where you can display your website address and it’s a great way to get exposure.

Here’s a screen shot of Mari Smith’s YouTube channel. Notice how she used a text box in her video to display key information, including her website URL at the end of her video. Smart move!

Social Media Tip of the Day

Measure social media ROI by analyzing how it performs compared to more established channels or advertising methods. It’s not comparing apples-to-apples when it comes to cost, but you can compare the quality of traffic they drive to your website.

Schools team for charity garage sale
Highland Secondary School’s gym will be the scene a massive, student-organized charity garage sale on Saturday, Nov. 5 . All proceeds go to The Ronald McDonald House of Hamilton.

Twenty-three Highland, Dr. John Seaton and Sir William Osler teams of students will each have their own tables with a particular theme, such as children’s items, furniture, books, household items, sports, and so on. The sale runs from 8-11:30 a.m.

The garage sale is the culmination of Dr. Osfest, a leadership camp for Dr. John Seaton and Sir William Osler’s Grade 7 students that took place in mid-October. Students in Highland’s leadership program hosted the fourth annual leadership camp for the 75 Grade 7 students.

Topics in the morning session included trust, motivation, communication and time management. In the afternoon, students began to organize a giant charity garage sale as a way for students to give back to the community and practise their leadership skills.

The goals of the project were to develop the leadership skills of the Grade 7 students, familiarize the students with Highland, help in the community and reinforce Highland’s environmental initiatives by recycling.

Costume coup highlight of 51st season opener
By Debra Downey, Senior Editor

Dundas Little Theatre continues a half-century of excellence with a thought-provoking play that is highlighted by a costume coup probably unparalleled in the company’s history.

DLT launched its 51st season on Friday night with Time and The Conways by J.B. Priestley. The audience was treated to an almost flawless performance whose central question will linger long after the final curtain closed.
Time and The Conways is one of Priestley’s famous “time plays” that explores past, present and future as a linear concept perceived only by humans.

The play spans a period of 19 years. At the beginning of Time and The Conways, it’s 1919, and the Conways, a prosperous Yorkshire family, are celebrating Kay’s 21st birthday. Kay hopes to be a novelist. Hazel, the beauty, anticipates a romantic marriage.

Madge wants to reform the world and marry the dashing young family lawyer. Carol, the baby of the family, spreads good cheer, while Robin, back from war, is certain to have a good career. Alan is content to be an armchair philosopher. Their mother has high hopes for them all. But things will not turn out as planned…or will it?

The audience is invited on the Conways’ adventure though a charming set decorated in warm golds and reds. Showing off its long-appreciated versatility, the Garstin Centre for the Arts has been configured for Time and The Conways so audience members are seated on three sides. It’s an atmosphere akin to dinner theatre and one that commands the attention of viewers.

Time and the Conways is talented director Brian Morton’s third venture for Dundas Little Theatre. The outstanding ensemble cast includes actors Chris Cracknell, Sarah Zuccolo, Deb Dagenais, Alexandra Pope, Michelle LaHaise, Andrea Adcock, Natalie Ruginis, Andrew Southam, Gregory Cruikshank and Ryan Trepanier.
The production is stage managed by Valerie VanLandschoot, with set design by Peter Lloyd. However, the behind-the-scenes hero of Time and The Conways is unquestionably Sally Watson, who looked after costumes.

The characters’ clothing — from accessories to dresses and suits — not only reflects the diverse time periods in the play and the family’s changing social status, but are colourful, eye-catching and add much to the overall authenticity of the production.

Kudos to all involved with Time and The Conways. It was a great kick-off for DLT’s 51st season. The one criticism — and there is only one — is that because the audience is seated on three sides, it is sometimes difficult to hear, or at certain points, audience members view the back of an actor for a prolonged period.
We trust this will be corrected as the stellar show continues Oct. 27-29 and Nov. 3-5, 8 p.m., at the Garstin Centre for the Arts. Tickets for the show are $18 with $13 students/seniors (65-plus) discounts for Thursday performances only.

For ticket information or to make a reservation, call 905-627-5266 or visit www.dundaslittletheatre.com. Dundas Little Theatre offers a special meal and show package on Oct. 22. Buy early and secure a spot at the Winchester Arms Restaurant. Just add $25 to the price of a ticket. For more information, call 905-627-1620.

QR Marketing

What the heck is a QR Code you ask? well it is again best described as

A QR code (abbreviated from Quick Response code) is a type of matrix barcode (or two-dimensional code) first designed for the automotive industry. More recently, the system has become popular outside of the industry due to its fast readability and comparatively large storage capacity.

So what does that mean for you as a small business owner?
Let say you have an ad in the paper for your business. And Your Marketing Goal is to engage your potential clients. A QR code could be linked in to your Facebook Page, Which will automatically take them to a 'Like' Button.

Now once you have them on your Facebook Page again you have a direct link to your clients who you know already like your product or service.

Then using Facebook are able to send them Coupons for sales, or at the very least update them on the latest happenings of your business.

With that very same ad, you can make a direct link to a video message or commercial you might have for your business.

Or you can just direct link them to your web page which includes all of what I just said.

The point is QR Codes connect the user to anything you could possibly imagine to promote your business.

QR Codes are also being used on Business Cards, have you ever been told to go to a web site for a company and you said you'll check it out later? well with a QR Code printed on a business card they won't forget. Just scan and you're instantly there.

One thing to note however some QR Readers on Smart Phones are a little tricky. If you have a video make sure it works on all platforms. Test it out first to make sure it all works.
There's nothing worse then scanning the QR Code and having it take you to a blank page or broken link!

Examples of Viral Marketing

Like the previous post I'm going to talk about viral marketing and what it means. Just in case it was missed on the last post.

The clearest definition of Viral Marketing can be explained like this:

marketing techniques that use pre-existing social networks to produce increases in brand awareness or to achieve other marketing objectives (such as product sales) through self-replicating viral processes, analogous to the spread of viruses or computer viruses. It can be delivered by word of mouth or enhanced by the network effects of the Internet. Viral marketing may take the form of video clips, interactive Flash games, advergames, ebooks, brandable software, images, or text messages.

So here are some examples of Viral Marketing.

Now for this one it uses the popularity of the Numa Numa guy whom became a youtube sensation a little while back in order to promote the Geico Brand. Its subtle but he's there.

Tiger Woods and EA Sports created this viral video in response to a Gammers comment about a Glitch the game had. Obviously, it wasn't.

This is an interesting one, using hip-hop music in the style of comedy of Lonely Island to sell you their car. If you don't know who lonely island is then you can look them up later!

So those are just some examples of Viral Marketing. I have one question to ask before I close. While watching any one of these three ads...where you entertained, did you feel the need to buy in, or at the very least wanted to show your friends these awesome videos? Exactly!

Viral Marketing

It's hard to understand why any company wouldn't want to throw out the old method
to try a different approach to marketing these days.

Its not enough anymore that you create a commercial for your product anymore, if your commercial doesn't have the ability to go viral it will surly be lost in the shuffle.

Viral Marketing can even be cheaper then your regular commercial marketing, its just a matter of aligning yourself with the right people for writing and executing it with the right team of filmmakers to make it look good or bad depending on which way it goes.

Think of your Viral Ad campaign as this horrible diagram I quickly drew up. Yay Photoshop!
Using various social media network and links, your viral video will spread like a virus through out the web.

Now you're asking, 'well how does that help me?' thats simple within each viral video produced youtube has a nifty little link button where you can 'Call to Action' and this action can be as simple as 'Like' us on facebook for 10 percent off your next purchase! I know, it doesn't seem like much but it means a lot to those who see it!

So they 'like' your facebook page, now what? well thats where some more social media marketing comes into play. Hopefully you'll be doing this already, but once you have a viewership at your finger tips keeping them up-to-date with what is going on with your service or product might be a good idea.

And people don't just 'like' anything for no reason so its like having a phonebook that lists people by interest and directly marketing to them!

Walking Dead Season Premiere

Walking Dead Season 2 Premiere
So tonight was the season 2 Premiere of Walking Dead on AMC, I was following the twitter feed as best as I could but I don’t think could keep up lol.

It was a pretty suspenseful first episode! They touched upon a couple things from the first season and then brought in some added bonus suspenseful storyline later on in the show.

I find it very interesting that despite the huge following Walking Dead has, they still decided to cut the budget for the second season. Not that it would really matter because they would find alternative ways to do certain effects for it.

Check out Stargate Studios, who did the Special effects in the first season if you like that kind of stuff!

Just a thought...

There is nothing more surprising then looking back at all you have accomplished over the last 4 years of your life and realize you have done more things in this world then most people have done in a life time.

I've had many moments over the last week where I would step out of the box in order to re-evaluate my life situation.

I know where I want to end up. Getting there will be a bit of a struggle but then I look at everything I have achieved and think its not impossible.

Nothing is impossible. How fast you achieve your goals in life depends on you and how badly you want it.

Don't you hate it when...

You find out about a really cool contest to enter, but, only have two more days to produce something!

Moby has a contest to make a music video with one of 3 tracks. Grand prize is that it gets displayed at Cannes and winner is picked as best new director category...Pretty sweet!

Also goes on to say - "Historically, many featured directors in the Showcase have gone on to seriously successful careers: Tarsem, Michel Gondry, Mark Romanek, Spike Jonze, Ivan Zacharias, Kinka Usher, Danny Kleinman and Jonathan Glazer included."

So...ya!

Monday May 2, 2011

Hello world!

So it is less then 2 days till voting is done for the Insidious Contest. I am excited to see who wins!
because it so obviously has to be us!

This morning I was up early so I decided to go for a jog. It was so nice to sweat everything out! I am pleased with myself. Not only that but it is such a warm morning but of course it has rain...so its not so nice.

Recently we have been going out a lot lately with so many different people. And meeting new people. Discovering a totally new way of thinking through other peoples life's challenges its rather neat!

Not only that but through those people I met a guy named Brad who is into Web and graphic design but is also enthusiastic about being in short films. He was trained as a wrestler and would be willing to get roughed up if need be so I was pretty stoked by the fact that I had more of a stunt person because those are hard to come by.

I leave you with this quote.

"Learn the art of patience. Apply discipline to your thoughts when they become anxious over the outcome of a goal. Impatience breeds anxiety, fear, discouragement and failure. Patience creates confidence, decisiveness, and a rational outlook, which eventually leads to success."
